TAVISTOCK 5-2 WADEBRIDGE TOWN
SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY
Langsford Park, 2.30pm Kick off
Referee: N. Hunnisett
Tavistock moved up a place into sixth with a victory over Wadebridge Town that was comfortable in the end after a few early nervous moments.
It was the first time either teams had played since mid-january but the game contained some high quality football and some well worked goals.
Wadebridge got off to a great start and took the lead through goals from Simon Poole who scored from 12 yards and Johnny May who converted a rebound after Connor Mewton's shot has smashed against the cross-bar.
This stunned the home fans, players and coaching staff, but the comeback was on after Jack Crago smartly glided the ball past the visiting 'keeper whilst being on his back on the ground after a menacing Lee Blatchford free-kick caused all sorts of problems for the away side.
Crago then quickly made it 2-2 when he again latched onto some suspect defending after another Blatchford free-kick.
The hosts then found themselves in front, after some good build-up play between Harry Southcott and Xoli NCube involved the latter firing a low cross into the six yard box where Craig Holt was there to make it 3-2 to the lambs.
Tavistock made one change at half-time with John Francis coming on for the injured Simon Cook.
Chances came and went for both sides at the start of the second half, home goalkeeper Jamie Castle made some tremendous saves, including a fantastic double-save, inbetween a great goal-line clearance from Joe Cook.
Christian Evans and substitute Francis appeared to have Mewton in their back pockets in the second period, the Wadebridge forward losing his cool at several moments after being negated and frustrated by the centre-back duo for Tavistock.
Nathan Ewing was then involved with fellow centre-midfielders Blatchford and Holt, in some neat triangle passing, before Blatchford looped a fantastic ball into the path of right midfielder James Phelps who tucked the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-2, and put Tavistock firmly in control.
Crago made it 5-2 ten minutes later, after poaching on a rebound from a Phelps 25-yard effort which came back off the crossbar.
The home side also brought on Tom McHale for Jack Crago and Glenn Hurrell for Joe Cook and the two subs were solid and helped get Tavistock through to the final whistle and get the three points.
This game was to much of the delight of new assistant manager Stewart Cawte, who with Dave Ewing managed to focus the players and get the victory.
Tavistock now five games without defeat, travel to lowly Morwenstow on Saturday as they look to continue to rise up the league, and with the amount of games in hand they have, a title challenge is more than likely.
